Agon, a defence testing and validation startup, has come out of stealth with £22 million from Lakestar, XYZ Venture Capital, Lux Capital, Northzone, 201 Ventures and D3, split across a £5 million pre-seed and a £17 million seed round. Synthetic battlefields built by Agon give AI defence systems somewhere to train, take hits and improve before they are deployed. Fresh capital will fund scaling and iteration of the platform for European end users.
Simulated combat environments sit at the centre of the offering. Counter-drone weapons can rehearse bringing down drone swarms inside the simulation, and the same infrastructure is pitched at designing, training and orchestrating AI systems faster than adversaries can. Customers span defence companies, AI developers and governments, with the wider aim of establishing sovereign European defence AI capability rather than relying on data held elsewhere.
Arriving as European governments show greater appetite for modern defence technology, sharpened by the war in Ukraine, the round ranks among the largest defence technology seed rounds in Europe this year.
Founded in 2026 by chief executive Tristam Constant, a former soldier and former Anduril director, and Junaid Hussain, co-founder of British defence startup Cambridge Aerospace and Google-backed AI and gaming company Iconic, Agon has since hired from Applied Intuition, Google, Helsing, Palantir, Amazon and Unity. Initial partnerships have been signed with European defence autonomy companies. Klaus Hommels of Lakestar has taken a seat on the board, and pre-seed backers returned in significant size for the second round.
We have spent the last six months quietly building, partnering with operationally proven platform builders and assembling a world-class team. We are in an AI arms race - Agon is developing the infrastructure that will ensure European defence can iterate and orchestrate systems at the pace of the threat.
Our launch today reflects the critical need for Europe to establish its own sovereign defence AI capability and the significant investor confidence in what we are building. With this investment we will now scale and iterate our platform for European end users.
