UK-based online tutoring platform Edumentors has raised £1.5 million in seed funding to develop Edu AI, a fully interactive, human-like AI tutor designed to make world-class personalised education available to anyone, anywhere. The funding will also accelerate growth of Edumentors’ existing human-to-human tutoring platform.
Founded in 2022, Edumentors connects school students with top-performing university students from leading UK institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge. These high-achieving tutors act as relatable role models, helping children learn in a way that is both academically effective and emotionally engaging. The platform has delivered over 100,000 lessons to date, with 98% of parents reporting significant academic improvement in their children.
Edu AI aims to replicate the benefits of live, one-to-one tutoring by creating a realistic teaching experience powered by AI. The system is designed to adapt to a student’s needs, break down complex subjects, provide visual explanations through diagrams and whiteboards, and respond to non-verbal cues such as facial expressions and body language. Unlike other AI tutoring attempts that rely on passive video or scripted content, Edu AI offers a dynamic, interactive experience that mirrors human interaction.
The investment round was led by Abu Dhabi-based Magna Investments, with participation from angels across more than 10 countries, including exited founders, AI startup CTOs, and education sector experts. Funds will be used for R&D, platform expansion, and the launch of additional AI-powered tools such as an AI co-pilot for online learning.
Edumentors has already introduced three AI-based tools to the market - an exam marking AI, an AI avatar parent influencer, and an AI tutor training module - and now plans to position Edu AI as a flagship product for scaling globally. With the global online tutoring market projected to reach $27 billion, the company sees AI tutoring as a much larger opportunity and is preparing for a future Series A to enter the US market.
