Grangemouth-based Impact Recycling, a company focused on recovering high-purity recycled polymers from consumer plastic waste, has raised £3 million in follow-on funding from IW Capital.
Established in 2014, the company has developed and brought to market a proprietary water-based density separation system called BOSS (Baffled Oscillation Separation System). This method enables the separation of mixed plastic waste into polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) streams, both reportedly exceeding 95% purity.
Impact Recycling is distinctive in the mechanical recycling industry due to its ability to process both rigid and flexible plastics. It currently operates facilities in Glasgow and Peterlee, serving clients across healthcare, packaging, and waste management sectors in the UK and Europe.
Its Glasgow site handles medical plastic waste from the NHS, while its Peterlee site recently added advanced infrastructure to process flexible film packaging – an area where many recyclers struggle, according to the company.
Previous funding rounds include a grant from Innovate UK and an £7 million loan from Nestlé in late 2023, which supported facility development.
In early 2024, the business licensed its BOSS technology to Syklo, a Finnish circular economy firm that plans to construct two 25,000-tonne plants, potentially increasing Finland’s recycling capacity by 50%. Impact Recycling has also signed a licensing agreement with Korean chemical firm LG Chem, who is a shareholder.
The latest investment comes amid tightening EU regulations, including the Plastic Packaging and Waste Directive, which mandates 35% recycled content in plastic packaging by 2030 and 60% by 2040.
Impact Recycling intends to use the fresh capital to scale operations and grow in existing and new markets.
