Ineffable Intelligence lands over £800m in a seed round led by Sequoia and Lightspeed to develop superintelligence with reinforcement learning

Ineffable Intelligence is an AI research startup developing systems that learn from their own experience to discover new knowledge. It focuses on building a “superlearner” designed to advance reinforcement learning and scientific discovery.

Ineffable Intelligence, an AI research startup, has raised over £810 million in a seed round led by Sequioa and Lightspeed with participation from NVIDIA, Index, Google, EQT, Evantic, Flying Fish, DST Global, BOND, Sovereign AI and British Business Bank. The round represents the largest European seed round in history. The company is building a “superlearner” designed to develop superintelligence by discovering knowledge from its own experience.

The approach focuses on reinforcement learning systems that learn independently rather than relying on human-generated data. Ineffable Intelligence aims to create systems capable of generating new knowledge through experience, building on advances in AI research led by its founder.

Ineffable Intelligence is led by David Silver, a professor at University College London and a researcher in reinforcement learning. His previous work includes contributions to AlphaGo, AlphaZero, AlphaFold and AlphaProof, and he previously led the reinforcement learning team at Google DeepMind.

Very few founders in the world could credibly set out to build a superlearner – a system that discovers new knowledge from its own experience, rather than ours. David is one of them. From AlphaGo to AlphaZero to AlphaProof, he has spent nearly two decades turning reinforcement learning from a research idea into the results the rest of the field builds on. Ineffable is being built in the UK – and that matters.

David Silver is a generational talent who has consistently been on the cutting edge of AI development. Ineffable Intelligence has the potential to produce a paradigm shift in our scientific and technology landscape, and we are incredibly excited to be supporting him and his team in this endeavour.
